Hearing the Voice of YHWH“And in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because you have obeyed my voice.” Genesis 22:18
How do we begin to hear the Voice of YHWH?
How do we know the Voice of YHWH?
What does the Voice of YHWH sound like?
Who can hear His Voice?
There is plentiful mention of YHWH speaking to His people:
- 413 times the Tanak says “said YHWH”
- 255 times the Tanak says “the Word of YHWH”
- 219 times the Tanak says “YHWH said”
- 49 times the Scriptures say “the Voice of YHWH”
- 46 times the Scriptures say “Elohim said”
- 45 times the Scriptures say “the Word of Elohim”
- 2 times the Scriptures says “the Voice of Elohim”
There is well over 1,000 places in the Word of YHWH where YHWH Elohim speaks to His people, that’s why Mashiyach is also called “the Word of YHWH”, the Scripture is what YHWH spoke His people. The Scripture is His Voice that His chosen have witnessed and testified of.
How do we begin to hear the Voice of YHWH?
If we consider that He spoke 1000′s and thousands of times in Scripture, then the first thing we will want to do is know what He has already spoken. It is a life long process and endeavour to know and hear the Word of YHWH. Ttere are infinite amounts of revelation that will come to us through His Word, if we learn to meditate and listen carefully. It is a very good idea to commit Scripture to memory, some folks are able to quote every verse in their Bibles from memory, most of us have our favourite verses that bring us a sense of the Father’s promises and blessings. Yet, memorizing Scripture and hearing His Voice as a personal and intimate experience are two different things.
Let’s assume that we’ve read all the Scriptures, Genesis to Revelation, and we are aware of each of the places where YHWH speaks to His people, but we are still unsure of how we can hear His Voice. First, let’s check out how much Faith we have, Faith is the necessary component that activates our neshama (Spirit), without Faith we have no spiritual life-force to even be able to hear His Voice.“But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that comes to Elohim must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
Putting all preconceived ideas of “Faith” aside let’s just keep it simple. Let’s do a “Faith” test shall we? Do you keep the 10 Commandments? Yes or no? If you say no, then why not? Answer: you have no faith. Those who don’t respect even the basic 10 Commandments have replaced YHWH’s Word with their own religion, whatever that might be. So Faith, isn’t some arbitrary theological knowledge base that you might have learned as a kid. No. Faith is an action, specifically the action and confidence that every word which proceeds from the Mouth of YHWH is Life.
When we approach the Master of the Universe we don’t do it on our terms, we don’t bring Him down to our level and expect Him to serve us and be obedient to our shtuff, quite the opposite is true. On a very basic level we begin to have a spiritual connection with the Father when we admit that all things were Created by Him. We must believe that “HE IS” which offers us the opportunity to experience HIS IMAGE in us, this is the first basic step.
We must believe and understand that YHWH “IS A REWARDER OF THEM THAT DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM”. In other words the Creator of the Universe has a purpose and a plan that we might not be privy to at the outset. We must understand that our efforts to hear His Voice are never in vain, we will be rewarded with a relationship in Him if we seek Him. We must also understand that He doesn’t speak to everyone the same, some people will freak out if you try to explain how He speaks with you. Religious people may well be your worst enemy because they already have their god in a box and so anything you have to say might very well be “outside” their religious box… religion is a nasty business.
Each time we feel compelled to do a righteous act we have evidence of the Father YHWH working in us and through us. There is a joy you receive within yourself in helping others, giving to others, seeing others succeed and you also share that joy from within yourself when you are blessed and grateful for who you are and what life has brought you. Even in the hardest times life has a way of speaking to us and telling us that everything is ok. It is that voice that speaks to you in such manner that is the “still small voice of the Spirit”, it’s not a religious thing… it’s a spiritual thing.
The Father YHWH instructs us to be a Kedoshim (Set Apart or Holy People) who do Righteous acts in His Name and for the benefit of one another. The definition of Grace is YHWH giving us all the “power” to overcome our carnal desires and hurtful habits. The more victory we experience, the more we know the presence of YHWH in our lives and the more we can learn to hear the sound of His Voice, it’s a very exciting thing once you experience Him.
The Father speaks to us by Grace, by showing us favor and giving us the strength to do what is right by Him and our fellow man. When we do what is righteous we are not so foolish as to take the credit to ourselves because we can see that it is YHWH who has raised us up on higher places.
How do we know the voice of YHWH?
The Joy of YHWH is our strength, we don’t take credit in ourselves or our religion, ideas or values, our Joy and rewards come from the Father because He sees the true scope of all things, we only see a bit of the whole. Taking credit for our own achievements devalues ourselves turns ourselves back to the finite entity of our own consciousness. We recognize the Life Force of YHWH within us is able to take us beyond the limitations of our own thoughts and accomplishments. We know the voice of YHWH within us when we begin to consistently act on behalf of His Kingdom.
The Voice of YHWH always confirms His Word. As the Father speaks to us we recognize the Ruach HaKodesh is writing the Torah upon our hearts. If we have little understanding of Torah, we will have little understanding of YHWH which makes it difficult to recognize His Voice. There are no shortcuts to knowing His voice, obedience to His Commandments ensures our ears will be open to hear from Him and we will also be able to detect counterfeit spirits. YHWH reveals Himself to us by speaking to our Spirits while we meditate on Him and His Word or in visions or dreams.“And He said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I YHWH will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.” Numbers 12:6
There are 60 places in the Scriptures where YHWH says “know that I am YHWH”, where He uses His Great Power and reveals His Greatness and Sovereignty to us. Whether we wait for Him to use His Power to convince us, or whether we look into what His Hand has accomplished for us already, we can see Him in what He has Created. Through His creation we can hear Him and see His Power and His Wonders revealed, people speak of seeing beauty in Creation that takes their breath away, this is the Voice of YHWH speaking to us.
What is the sound of His Voice?
The Attributes of YHWH speak to us about Who He is. It is through the Attributes He revealed to us that we recognize the sound of His voice. Consider the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen. Regardless of what it is, YHWH gives it form. YHWH provides the materials and energy within the sub-atomic universe for everything to exist. The sense of awe that we have in Him is also the sound of His voice. Even the greatest of painters or sculptures must recognize that YHWH provided the canvas, the thoughts and the colours behind all that brings beauty to a work of art. A rainbow shows us His pallet of colours, or a sunset, or a storm, or lake that mirrors His handiwork.
In one way we feel humble and small in the Presence of such awesome beauty, but in another way we are elevated beyond the common or mundane feelings and this is the sound of His voice. YHWH’s voice brings Hope, Peace, Love, Justice and Righteousness, and correction or punishment when it’s need and we feel guilt and shame for something we did or said, so that He can guide us in the right direction. The motive behind our guilt or shame is one of Righteousness and Truth, YHWH does not condemn us, we might condemn ourselves or others might be inspired by the evil one to condemn us but YHWH doesn’t.
Who can hear His Voice?“I will bless YHWH at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in YHWH: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify YHWH with me, and let us exalt His Name together. I sought YHWH, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto Him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and YHWH heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of YHWH encamps round about them that fear Him, and delivers them. O taste and see that YHWH is good: blessed is the man that trusts in Him. O fear YHWH, you His saints: for there is no want to them that fear Him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek YHWH shall not want any good thing. Come, you children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of YHWH. What man is he that desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of YHWH are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry. The face of YHWH is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and YHWH hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. YHWH is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but YHWH delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones: not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. YHWH redeems the soul of His servants: and none of them that trust in Him shall be desolate.” Psalm 34
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of Elohim!
Let every thing that has breath praise YHWH! Halleluyah!
YHWH be with you,
Baruch Ben Daniel
